Carolina overcome a slow start offensively to cruise past North Carolina A&T, 66-47, on Tuesday night in Greensboro. It was the Tar Heels’ first true road game of the season.

UNC shot just 4-15 (26.7 percent) in the first quarter, but still entered the second with a 13-10 lead thanks to equally poor shooting from the Aggies. North Carolina A&T finished the quarter at 3-11 (27.3 percent). Carolina stretched its lead in the second, with three-pointers from Laila Hull, Lanie Grant and Lexi Donarski pushing the advantage to 35-21 by halftime.

The Aggies got as close as eight points at 37-29 midway through the third, but a three from redshirt freshman Ciera Toomey restored UNC’s double-digit lead. North Carolina A&T wouldn’t get any closer than nine for the rest of the evening.

Nine of the 10 Tar Heels to play scored, with Hull – a redshirt freshman from Indiana who missed all of last season with an injury – leading the way with 14 points. Donarski added 10, while Alyssa Ustby added seven points, nine rebounds and two assists. Indya Nivar, who missed the first two games of the season with an undisclosed injury, dressed but did not play. Also sitting out were guard Kayla McPherson – who is rehabbing an injury sustained last season – guard Sydney Barker and forward Maria Gakdeng. It’s the first game Gakdeng has missed this season, and freshman Blanca Thomas started in her place. Thomas finished with two points in 15 minutes.

Now 3-0, UNC will be back in action on Friday night when it faces Paige Bueckers and No. 2 UConn at the Greensboro Coliseum.
