The NCAA Tournament is coming back to Chapel Hill.

The UNC women’s basketball team earned a No. 3 seed in the tournament field Sunday night and will host postseason games at Carmichael Arena for the first time since 2015. Joining the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill will be No. 6 seed West Virginia, No. 14 seed Oregon State and either Columbia or Washington, who will play each other in a play-in game earlier in the week. Carolina will face Oregon State in the opening round Saturday, with the winner facing either the Mountaineers, the Lions or the Huskies Monday.

The Tar Heels are placed in the Birmingham 2 region. Notably, Duke is the No. 2 seed in the region, meaning Carolina could face the Blue Devils in the Sweet 16. The top seed in the region is South Carolina.

The Tar Heels enter the tournament with a 27-7 overall record. The season has already reached several high-water marks for head coach Courtney Banghart’s six seasons in Chapel Hill: UNC’s 27 overall wins are a single-season record for her tenure, and the Tar Heels advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2014.

Carolina has won at least one NCAA Tournament games in each of the past three seasons and reached the Sweet 16 in 2022.
