Carolina won its sixth straight game on Sunday, as the Tar Heels throttled Coppin State 72-46 at Carmichael Arena.

Maria Gakdeng led the way in a balanced scoring effort, finishing as Carolina’s leading scorer with 10 points. It’s the third straight game in which Gakdeng has scored in double figures. Lexi Donarski each scored nine, Reniya Kelly and Ciera Toomey scored eight and Alyssa Ustby, Grace Townsend and Trayanna Crisp each scored six. Twelve of the thirteen Tar Heels to play on the afternoon scored.

Carolina led by as many as 21 points in the first half and pulled away for the final 26-point margin late in the fourth quarter. UNC’s defense held Coppin State to just 18-66 shooting (27.3 percent) and 6-28 (21.4 percent) shooting on three-pointers. Carolina shot a pedestrian 28-63 (44.4 percent) from the field overall, but finished 12-26 (46.2 percent) on threes. The 12 made threes are a season high.

The win improves Carolina to 9-1 on the season. It’s the third time in the last four seasons the Tar Heels have started 9-1 or better through 10 games. UNC will be back in action when it hosts UNC-Greensboro at Carmichael Arena on December 11 at 7 p.m.
