Star freshman Mabrey Shaffmaster has been a key cog in the UNC volleyball team’s resurgent 2021 season. After two home wins against rivals NC State and Duke sent Carolina to a 17-4 overall record, Shaffmaster was recognized as the ACC Freshman of the Week for a second time this season. She previously won the award for the week of October 4-10.

In UNC’s victories over the Wolfpack and Blue Devils, Shaffmaster totaled 32 kills and 14 digs, while the Tar Heels lost only one set between the two matches. Shaffmaster also sent in three service aces, and has quickly made a name for herself as the best server on Carolina’s roster. Her 24 service aces this season are by far the most on the team.

Shaffmaster recorded her fifth double-double of the season against NC State, racking up 19 kills and 13 digs. She is second on the team in kills with 251, trailing only Nia Parker-Robinson’s 278. Her 170 digs rank third among her teammates.

Shaffmaster and the Tar Heels will try to extend their six-match winning streak this weekend when the team visits No. 14 Georgia Tech on Friday and Clemson the following Sunday.
