UNC junior Zac Gallen has been named the National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, the group announced Tuesday.

The right hander dominated Virginia Tech in his start on Friday night, striking out a career-high 13 Hokies en route to a four-hit complete-game shutout. The 13 strikeouts were the most by a Tar Heel pitcher since Matt Harvey struck out 15 Clemson Tigers in 2010. UNC starter JB Bukauskas followed up Gallen’s Friday night performance with his own 13-strikeout game in Saturday’s series clincher against Va Tech.

No. 15 UNC will be back in action on Wednesday night in Charlotte taking on No. 8 South Carolina. The Tar Heels will continue ACC play this weekend travelling to take on the Virginia Cavaliers.
