Facing off against Virginia’s Thai-Son Kwiatkowski–a player he beat twice earlier in the season–UNC men’s tennis freshman William Blumberg was poised to take the program’s first ever NCAA Singles Championship on Monday.

Kwiatkowski, however, avenged his earlier defeats by picking up a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Blumberg when it mattered most at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.

It was a result all too familiar to UNC fans, which saw Virginia take out the Tar Heels in the NCAA Team Championship Final just last week.

For Blumberg, the loss in the final snapped what had been an incredible 25-match win streak–leaving him with a 31-3 record in his debut season as a collegiate player.

He was also previously undefeated against ACC opponents prior to Monday, making the loss that much tougher to swallow.

As someone who enrolled in Chapel Hill early to begin his playing career at the next level this season, the future still appears extremely bright for Blumberg–who seems poised to shatter the UNC record book should he choose to do so.
