A close 4-3 loss to the No. 2 seed Virginia Cavaliers during Saturday’s semifinals in Cary put a halt to the ACC Tournament title hopes for third-seeded UNC, which will now turn its attention to the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
UNC won the doubles point and the first singles match courtesy of Benjamin Sigouin (6-0, 6-2), but Virginia won each of the next three matches to take the 3-2 lead.
Blaine Boyden (6-1, 6-7, 6-3) then tied things up for the Tar Heels, before another close match between Virginia’s Carl Soderlund and UNC’s William Blumberg went in favor of the Cavaliers (6-3, 6-7, 6-4) and clinched the overall team win.
The ninth-ranked Tar Heels will enter the NCAA Tournament with a record of 18-6.
