Zack Canada’s RBI single in the top of the ninth inning handed the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks a surprising 5-4 victory over the No. 6 UNC baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.

It was the first time the Tar Heels (2-2) have lost their home opener since 2014.

Sophomore Michael Busch hit a three-run homer in the home half of the first inning that gave UNC an early lead, but the Seahawks were able to battle back during the middle stages of the game.

An RBI double from Greg Jones in the fifth inning–followed by a three-run blast from Mason Byrne in the sixth–gave UNC-Wilmington its first lead of the day.

The bottom of the seventh inning saw the Tar Heels tie things back up when Kyle Datres drove home Brandon Riley with a line drive off the wall in right field.

Datres finished the game with three hits for the Tar Heels, while Busch added two to represent five of the team’s eight on the day.

Following Canada’s clutch blooper in the ninth inning off freshman reliever Joey Lancellotti, however, UNC was unable to muster another comeback–completing the upset victory for the Seahawks.
