Of the 25 players selected Thursday as nominees for the women’s Tewaaraton Award, UNC led the country with four Tar Heels finding their names among the elite group.
Attackers Jamie Ortega and Katie Hoeg join defender Emma Trenchard and goalie Taylor Moreno in getting nominated for the most prestigious award in college lacrosse–which is given to the nation’s top player.
Ortega leads the Tar Heels (14-0) with a whopping 80 points this season, having tallied 61 goals and 19 assists. Hoeg is just behind with 70 points, scoring 28 goals and dishing out a team-high 42 assists.
Trenchard and Moreno have been the key cogs of a stingy UNC defense which has allowed just 5.86 goals per game.
Northwestern and Syracuse were just behind the Tar Heels with three players nominated apiece. A total of five women will be selected as finalists in three weeks upon the completion of the regular season.
