Cam Lindley’s penalty kick goal in the 40th minute was enough to deliver a 1-0 victory for the fifth-ranked UNC men’s soccer team on Friday night at WakeMed Soccer Park against the rival NC State Wolfpack.
It was the eighth straight victory for the Tar Heels (10-1, 4-0 ACC), and the 100th career victory for head coach Carlos Somoano–the NCAA’s active leader in winning percentage among Division I coaches.
“I don’t coach to accumulate wins, I coach for our student-athletes to achieve their goals,” Somoano said after the game. “And I can say that with 100 percent sincerity. I just want to see these guys enjoy their experience and love playing for and representing Carolina.”
Although UNC controlled much of the action in the first half, it was unable to get on the board against the Wolfpack until forward Alan Winn was taken down in the box just minutes before halftime.
Lindley then sent home the penalty kick attempt for his third goal of the season, and the Tar Heels managed to hang onto their slim lead the rest of the way.
NC State (4-4-1, 1-3 ACC) put three shots on goal–its total for the entire game–in the final 10 minutes, but was unable to get anything past freshman goalkeeper Alec Smir.
