The UNC men’s lacrosse team rattled off a series of goals in front of 3,371 fans at Kenan Satdium on Saturday afternoon for a victory over No. 1 Notre Dame.
The Fighting Irish were visiting the Tar Heels on Senior Day and got off to a hot start. Notre Dame led UNC 15-10 with just over 10 minutes to play. Then the offense for the 16th-ranked Tar Heels reached another gear, scoring seven straight goals over a 7:29 stretch as the game was coming to a close.
Luke Goldstock and Steve Pontrello each scored four goals and added two assists to their offensive lines to lead the UNC attack.
UNC moved to 8-5 on the season and 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Notre Dame fell to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
The win secured the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament for Carolina, which begins on Friday in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Tar Heels will face fourth-seeded Syracuse in the first semifinal at six o’clock on Friday night.
No. 2 seed Notre Dame will face third-seeded Duke in the other semifinal. The championship game will then be played on Sunday.
This is the first time since 1996 that the Tar Heels are the top seed in the ACC Tournament. It’s also the first co-regular season conference championship for UNC since 2013.
