A trio of UNC men’s golf players made waves last week with their play on the summer amateur circuit, a list which includes rising fifth-year senior Ryan Gerard, rising senior Dougie Ergood and incoming freshman David Ford.

Gerard shot a 5-under-par 67 in the final round on Friday to win medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier in Hobe Sound, Florida — securing himself one of two automatic berths available for the upcoming 2021 U.S. Amateur Tournament.

He finished the event with a score of 6-under-par, two shots ahead of second-place Nashawn Tyson. Gerard joins UNC teammate Peter Fountain in earning a spot in the U.S. Amateur, with Fountain doing so already by being ranked in the top 50 of the World Amateur Rankings.

Ergood shot 3-under-par for the event at the New Jersey Amateur to finish in second place at that event, three shots behind winner Michael Brown.

Ford — the No. 1 ranked junior golfer in the country — showed why he earned that lofty status as the only male player to win all four of his matches at the AJGA Wyndham Cup in South Carolina, an event which features the top 40 male and female junior players in the country in an East-West format.

With Ford joining the UNC roster next season, the Tar Heels will seek to improve on their fifth place tie at the NCAA Championships — the program’s best finish since taking third in 1993.
