Mack Brown and UNC football received terrific news on Friday when Class of 2020 defensive end Desmond Evans announced his commitment to the Tar Heels.

Evans — who plays at Lee County High School in Sanford, North Carolina — is ranked as the No. 4 defensive end in the country and the No. 22 player overall per the 247 Sports Composite rankings. ESPN ranks Evans as the No. 2 player in the country. He chose UNC over offers from Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and others.

The five-star Tar Heel commit is no stranger to UNC’s campus. Evans visited Chapel Hill for UNC’s games against Appalachian State (September 21) and Clemson (September 28). He also attended the Tar Heels’ win over South Carolina in Charlotte to begin the season.

Evans is the 23rd commitment for North Carolina this recruiting cycle and joins a class that ranks fourth in the ACC, behind only Clemson, Florida State and Miami. He is the third blue-chip defensive lineman that Brown has landed this cycle along with four-star defensive end Myles Murphy (Greensboro, NC) and four-star defensive tackle Kendrick Bingley-Jones (Charlotte, NC).

In addition to his commitment, Evans was selected to the 2020 Under Armour All-American game in Florida.

As it currently stands, Evans is the highest-rated recruit that North Carolina has landed since Marvin Austin in the Class of 2007. He is also only the fourth five-star that the Tar Heels have secured since modern recruiting rankings began.

Brown and the rest of the Tar Heels’ staff reacted on Twitter following Evans’ announcement.
