UNC head football coach Mack Brown announced at a press conference on Sunday that true freshman Sam Howell will work with the first team offense in fall camp.

Howell was the prize recruit of UNC’s 2019 recruiting class, a four-star recruit from Monroe, NC who flipped his commitment from Florida State after Brown took the head coaching job last winter.

He was the No. 3 ranked dual-threat quarterback in the nation coming out of high school by 24/7 Sports and the No. 93 overall ranked prospect regardless of position.

Prior to this announcement, Howell had been locked in a three-way competition for the job with redshirt freshmen Jace Ruder and Cade Fortin–two players who each saw limited playing time last season before injuries sidelined them.

Brown did tell reporters, however, that the decision was still subject to change before the season opener against South Carolina if Howell were to start struggling in practice.

That game against the Gamecocks is set for 3:30 p.m. in Charlotte on Aug. 31.
