UNC travels to Winston-Salem tonight to play Wake Forest, but the Tar Heels’ head coach wishes the game was on a different day.

Mack Brown told 97.9 The Hill’s Ron Stutts that he believes Friday nights are for high school football.

Well, I don’t like playing on Friday nights because, to me, Friday night is for high school football, and that’s something that we always believe,” Brown said. “And this was a Thursday night game that got moved to Friday.

“Ron, you know, TV controls everything. So we’ll do what we’re told. But I’d rather Friday night be sacred for just high schools, and that the way I’ve always felt and I think it’s important.”

Brown’s relationship with high school coaches is something the Hall of Fame head coach is known for.

After Texas’ national championship over USC in 2005, Brown thanked high school football in Texas as he was being presented with the national championship trophy.

Brown also has preached the need to recruit the state of North Carolina first and foremost.

“You’ve got to win at home in recruiting before you go out of state,” Brown said. “Because if the locals won’t come, why would an out-of-state guy that’s really good want to come?”

This effort has shown in Brown’s first two recruiting classes at North Carolina. In the 2019 class, the Tar Heels signed 10 players from in-state, including Sam Howell — who was ranked as the top recruit in North Carolina. In the incomplete 2020 recruiting class, Brown has commitments from 12 in-state prospects.

In the 247Sports rankings, Carolina has commitments from two of the top six players in the state and is still in the race for five-star defensive end Desmond Evans from Sanford.

Despite not liking to play on Fridays. Brown recognizes that this is another opportunity for Carolina to play on national television.

“We’ve got our third-straight national TV game, and there’ll be a lot of eyeballs watching us to see if we can handle the success of the first two weeks.”
