Mack Brown and UNC football received some big news on Friday, when four-star quarterback Drake Maye announced via social media that he flipped his commitment from Alabama to the Tar Heels.
Maye, a 6-foot-5, 210-pounder from Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park High, originally committed to Alabama in July 2019. Rated as a four-star recruit, Maye is the son of former UNC quarterback Mark Maye and the younger brother of former Tar Heel basketball star Luke Maye.
As a junior last season for Myers Park in Charlotte, Maye threw for 3,512 yards with a 50-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
Head coach Mack Brown and offensive coordinator Phil Longo took to social media to celebrate the news.
Maye’s commitment is a much-needed boost to a UNC quarterback room that has seen many turnovers and injuries. After Sam Howell was named the starter for the 2019 season, Cade Fortin elected to transfer and Jace Ruder suffered an injury that kept him out the majority of the season. Baring any transfers, Maye will join a quarterback room in 2021 that will include then-third year QB Sam Howell, fourth-year Jace Ruder, and second-year Jacolby Criswell.
