DURHAM, NC-Things looked grim for UNC baseball with not much time left, but the team ultimately pulled out the 12-7 win in the early hours of Saturday morning against Clemson  in 14 innings for the Heels’ second game of the ACC Tournament.

The top-seeded Heels were down 7-2 heading into their final at-bat inning of the game, and they were still down by three when they were just one out away from giving the contest to the Tigers. It was a three-run homer from Brian Holberton that tied the game at 7.

Neither team could get any offensive action for the next several innings until the top of the 14th, when Cody Stubbs beat the tag to drive one run home and make it 8-7. But it was Chaz Frank who sealed the deal for the Heels, hitting a bases-loaded triple and scoring four more runs. It was a 1-2-3 finish in the bottom half of the inning to put the game away; the entire game ran for about five and a half hours.

UNC now moves to 50-8 overall on the year, while Clemson drops to 39-19. The Tar Heels are set to take on the fourth-seeded Wolfpack Saturday night, with first pitch set for 7:00. It’s a much-anticipated showdown, because during the Heels’ regular season series against NC State, each team picked up one win before the tiebreaking game was rained out.

The winner of Saturday night’s game will take on No. 6 seed Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. on Sunday for the ACC Championship.
