Make it 24 straight wins for the top-ranked UNC field hockey team, which began the 2019 regular season on Friday with a 4-2 road victory over the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

Although Michigan took the lead with a goal in the second minute of the game, sophomore Erin Matson scored three times in a span of under eight minutes to put the Tar Heels ahead for good–as they look to build off last year’s undefeated national championship run.

Marissa Creatore also added a goal in the second half to provide some insurance for UNC in the closing minutes.

“Michigan is a very competitive team,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “I think they learned from this game, too. I’m thankful we could find a way to win because they’re going to beat a lot of good teams this year.”
