DURHAM – The top-seeded UNC baseball team rolled over Miami, 10-0, in its opening game of the ACC tournament Thursday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Starting pitcher Kent Emanuel went the distance for the Heels, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning and allowing only four hits in eight innings. The game ended in the bottom of the eighth, as the mercy rule kicked in after Cody Stubbs drove in Colin Moran with a double to give Carolina a 10-run lead.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Colin Moran got the scoring started with an RBI single, breaking UNC’s single-season RBI record in the process; Brian Holberton drove in two more later in the inning to give Carolina a 3-0 lead.
UNC rolled from there: Cody Stubbs drove in two more with a third-inning single to give the Heels a 5-0 lead before the Hurricanes even got their first hit–then Parks Jordan drove in another pair on a sixth-inning single to make it 7-0. Carolina added two more in the seventh on a throwing error and an RBI double from Holberton, then Stubbs’ eighth-inning RBI triggered the mercy rule. Holberton and Stubbs led the Heels with three RBIs each.
ACC tournament action continues all weekend for Carolina: on Friday the Tar Heels take on Clemson at 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday UNC faces NC State at 7:00 p.m. The winner of the UNC-NC State-Clemson-Miami round robin will move on to the tournament final at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
