As the numerous watch lists for college football’s major awards continue to roll out in anticipation of the upcoming season, UNC sophomore Tom Sheldon was selected on Wednesday as a player to keep an eye on for this year’s Ray Guy Award.
Handed out annually to the nation’s top punter since 2000, the Ray Guy Award lists a total of 29 preseason candidates entering the 2017 season.
This includes Sheldon, who burst onto the scene last year as a 28-year-old freshman from Australia.
The left-footed Aussie was named a Freshman All-American following his first season in the sport, after helping the Tar Heels rank first nationally in punt return defense.
Opponents returned just two of Sheldon’s punts for a total of nine yards during the 2016 campaign.
