Former UNC head coach Roy Williams is one day into his retirement and the search for his replacement has already heated up on betting sites.
It didn’t take long for betting sites to place odds on the next North Carolina head coach. After all, the job doesn’t open frequently and is perhaps the best in college basketball.
The search committee — which consists of UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham and chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz — has a tall task ahead of them, but betting sites have already placed odds on who they think will be tabbed as the next head coach of the Tar Heels.
Sports Betting Dime thinks the favorite for the job is already in Chapel Hill. UNC assistant coach Hubert Davis (+100) is the leading contender per the betting site to take over as the next head coach.
Davis played at UNC under Dean Smith from 1988-92 and spent 14 seasons in the NBA. Following his retirement from professional basketball, Davis became an analyst for ESPN before joining Williams’s staff as an assistant coach in 2012. He also coaches UNC’s junior varsity team.
Another former UNC basketball player holds the second-highest odds in Wes Miller (+275). Miller was a member of the 2005 national championship team — which was Williams’ first title in Chapel Hill. In 2011, Miller was named the head coach at UNC-Greensboro and has since led the Spartans to two NCAA Tournament appearances, three Southern conference championships and five 20-win seasons.
The third-highest odds belong to Jerry Stackhouse (+600), who played for 19 seasons in the NBA after his college career at UNC. A two-time NBA All-Star, Stackhouse is the current head coach at Vanderbilt and has a 20-37 record through two seasons.
Other names on the list include Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon (+900), UNC assistant coach Steve Robinson (+1200) and Stanford head coach Jerod Haase (+1400). Turgeon and Haase were assistant coaches under Williams at Kansas and UNC respectively.
Rounding out the list at the bottom with extremely low odds are former UNC basketball stars Kenny Smith (+3300), Michael Jordan (+50000) and Vince Carter (+50000).
