Eight different UNC teams were recognized Wednesday by the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent nationally in Academic Progress Rates for their respective sports.

Those teams include: men’s and women’s tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, women’s golf, women’s fencing, men’s cross country and men’s soccer.

The APR measures a team’s academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. It accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation. This year’s award is based on multi-year rates from data including 2012-13 to 2015-16.

Notre Dame (14), Duke (12) and Boston College (12) were the only schools in the ACC with more teams among the top 10 percent in APR.

UNC’s women’s fencing and women’s golf teams earned praise from the NCAA for being just two of 93 programs nationwide to earn the distinction 12 years in a row.

The Tar Heel volleyball squad placed in the top 10 percent for the 11th consecutive year, while gymnastics is in the midst of an eight-year streak.
