With the 27th overall pick of the 2020 MLB Draft on Wednesday night, the Minnesota Twins selected UNC designated hitter Aaron Sabato.
As a freshman in 2019, Sabato exploded onto the scene in Chapel Hill–leading the Tar Heels by hitting .343 with 18 home runs to earn National Freshman of the Year honors. After just 19 games in 2020 before the season was canceled, Sabato had a team-high seven home runs.
At 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, Sabato brings plenty of raw power to a Minnesota team that set the all-time single season record for home runs last season.
According to Pat James, UNC has now had 23 first and compensation round picks all-time. Of those 23 players 16 have played for head coach Mike Fox and 12 have come since 2006.
