The UNC lacrosse programs had two different tales to tell coming off of Saturday road matches, as the men’s team picked up a win and the women’s team suffered a big defeat.

No. 17 Carolina men’s lacrosse beat Stony Brook 12-8 in New York, marking the fourth consecutive win for the Tar Heels and drawing their record to 6-2 this spring. After falling into an early hole of 2-0 to the Seawolves, UNC freshman attacker Owen Duffy scored two goals to respond — just 15 seconds apart from each other. Carolina then took control in the second quarter to lead Stony Brook 6-4 at the half and scored four straight goals in the third quarter to strengthen their grip on the game.

Duffy finished as the leading scorer for Carolina, netting four goals and an assist. It continues his torrid scoring stretch, as the East Quogue, N.Y. native marked a third consecutive game with four or more goals and finished UNC’s road trip with 13 goals and seven assists. Redshirt freshman Dominic Pietramala also scored a hat trick and graduate student attacker Logan McGovern added a pair of goals for the Tar Heels on Saturday.

The win against Stony Brook will also go in the record books, marking the 250th career victory for UNC men’s lacrosse head coach Joe Breschi. After earning 92 wins at Ohio State before arriving at North Carolina, Saturday was Breschi’s 158th win in Carolina blue and he is the fourth active Division I head coach reach 250 career victories.

Meanwhile, the No. 9 UNC women’s lacrosse team was also in New York to take on No. 7 Syracuse. The Orange overwhelmed the Tar Heels 20-5, and set the tone early with five unanswered goals scored in the first four minutes of play. Carolina failed to make up any ground going into halftime, as they trailed 8-3, and Syracuse broke the game open further in the third quarter. The Orange outscored UNC 7-1 and 5-1 in the final two frames.

The Tar Heels’ five goals represents the lowest point total scored this year, matching their output in a 7-5 defensive slog against No. 5 Notre Dame two weeks prior. Saturday’s loss drops them to 2-2 in ACC play and 6-3 on the season, while Syracuse remains undefeated in ACC play at 4-0.

Both Carolina lacrosse programs will return to Chapel Hill to play back-to-back games at Dorrance Field next weekend. The women’s team will host Louisville at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 before the men’s team plays High Point at 3 p.m. Being a lacrosse doubleheader, one ticket next week will grant Tar Heel fans access to both games.
