Inside Lacrosse Magazine revealed Wednesday that UNC attackers Katie Hoeg and Jamie Ortega are its National Players of the Year for the women’s game, following an outstanding beginning to the 2020 season before the NCAA canceled all spring sports due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hoeg led the top-ranked Tar Heels with 22 goals and 30 assists as a senior, while her 52 points were tied for first in the country. She also became the all-time leading scorer in the program’s storied history, ending the season with 261 career points.

Ortega, a junior, had a team-high 32 goals to go along with 13 assists. She is now fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list at 243 points.

In addition to Hoeg and Ortega becoming the first players to split Inside Lacrosse’s National Player of the Year award, freshman midfielder Emily Nalls also earned a spot on the magazine’s 10-person All-Rookie Team.
