Sophomore center fielder Justice Thompson’s RBI single in the top of the ninth inning on Friday in Tallahassee proved to be the game-winner, as the UNC baseball team topped No. 18 Florida State by a score of 4-3.

Thompson’s hit came at the most critical time and helped erase the fact that he had struck out in each of his previous four plate appearances in the game.

It also snapped what had been a four-game losing streak for the Tar Heels (14-10, 9-7 ACC), the longest ever under new head coach Scott Forbes.

Colby Wilkerson got the scoring started for UNC in the fifth inning, when he laid a bunt perfectly down the first base line and Johnny Castognozzi made his way across home plate.

In the seventh inning, the Tar Heels tripled their lead on a two-run single by Angel Zarate.

Florida State (13-9, 8-8 ACC) immediately answered with a three-run home run by Elijah Cabell in the home half of the seventh inning–tying the game at 3-3.

UNC starting pitcher Austin Love was done after the seventh, having struck out a whopping 10 Florida State hitters.

Lefty Caden O’Brien ultimately recorded the final four outs for the Tar Heels, including three straight strikeouts to end the game following Thompson’s go-ahead RBI.
