Coach K is getting fired up — just in time for Carolina.
Mike Krzyzewski, the most media-protected coach in the country, took the opportune time to lash out at his rare critics who are wondering aloud what is going on with this current team.
After his Blue Devils lost two straight games to Wake Forest and Virginia, even the Duke blogs were on the Army Captain’s case about who he plays and for how many minutes. Granted, it’s been confusing with like 12 different starting lineups this season and the minutes taking wild swings for just about everyone except stars Vernon Carey and Tre Jones.
But it is just a more circuitous route to where Duke ends up almost every March, playing seven guys despite however many McDonald’s All-Americans are in the program.
Even the Bull Durham blog, which is the most over-the-top homer site on the royal blue web, ripped Coach K after the loss at Virginia, when guys who hadn’t been playing played and guys who had played and done well didn’t even get off the bench.
After the big win over N.C. State, Coach K took to the airwaves to both divert attention away from his kids, who really weren’t being criticized, and to defend himself with an uncharacteristic rant.
While admonishing his own fans for calling out the players, Krzyzewski said you can carp at him but before you do, please walk into Cameron and look up at the ceiling, where all of the Duke banners – most won by his teams, hang from the rafters.
Who knows, Coach K might have also been toasted over the recent poll that came out ranking coaches success in the NCAA Tournament during this century. K was No. 347 and Roy Williams No. 1.
All this is perfect timing for the inconsistent Devils who need a strong run to improve their NCAA seeding. And with Carolina coming in, Coach K is really getting lathered up for a big win over the ACC’s last-place team.
Tune in tomorrow, and I’ll tell you why it just might not happen.
