Mark Dillon and Casey Kania of the UNC men’s tennis team took top honors in doubles at the Elon Fall Invitational last weekend, winning the Gold Bracket doubles championship. The win marks the first collegiate title for both Dillon, a junior from Charlotte, and Kania, a freshman from Middlefield, CT.

The win in the championship match was the third in three days for Dillon and Kania, who defeated teams from UNC-Asheville and Radford on Friday to advance to the final round. The match against the Asheville team proved to be their most difficult of the tournament. In a single-set format, the set went to a 6-6 tiebreaker, where Dillon and Kania eventually put away the opponents to win, 7-6. They then dispatched the Radford team by a 6-4 score to advance again.

Once in the final, Dillon and Kania put together their best performance and defeated Codie Van Schalwk and Oliver Nolan of Old Dominion 6-2 to clinch the doubles championship. Nolan had previously been an ITA doubles champion while competing at UNC-Asheville.

Both Dillon and Kania will be back in action with the UNC men’s tennis team next week at the ITA Men’s All-American Championships, to be held in Tulsa, OK between October 2 and 10.
