Both UNC tennis teams punched their tickets to the NCAA super regionals over the weekend at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. The top-ranked women followed up a first-round win against Charleston Southern on Friday with another victory against Old Dominion on Saturday, while the No. 16 overall seed men defeated Drake on Saturday and Utah on Sunday.

Against the Monarchs, the women’s team had no trouble in the doubles point, using straight sets wins by Elizabeth Scotty and Carson Tanguilig as well as Reese Brantmeier and Reilly Tran to secure the 1-0 lead.

In singles, the trio of Tran, Fiona Crawley and Anika Yarlagadda each sealed dominant straight-sets wins to clinch the match for the Tar Heels. As the top overall seed in the women’s championship, Carolina will host its super regional match against No. 16 overall seed Florida. The match is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m.

On the men’s side, the Tar Heels overcame an early stumble in the doubles point against Drake in the first round. After going down 1-0, the Tar Heels dominated singles play with four straight-sets wins from Logan Zapp, Brian Cernoch, Ryan Seggerman and Karl Poling to advance to Sunday’s second round.

Carolina had no doubles troubles against the Utes, using tight wins from Casey Kania and Seggerman as well as Poling and Will Jansen to seal the point. And in singles, Seggerman won in straight sets before Cernoch and Benjamin Kittay prevailed in second-set tiebreaks to clinch UNC’s ninth straight appearance in the super regionals.

Unlike the women, the men will have to go on the road for their super regional match, and it’ll be a tough assignment: a visit to Austin and No. 1 overall seed Texas. That match is scheduled for Saturday with a time to be announced.
