The No. 1 UNC women’s tennis team had no trouble with its first opponent in the NCAA Championship Friday afternoon, advancing past Charleston Southern 4-0 in Chapel Hill.

The dominant performance started in doubles, as Elizabeth Scotty and Carson Tanguilig blanked their Buccaneer opponents 6-0 before Reese Brantmeier and Reilly Tran clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win.

Straight sets wins in singles from Tran, Abbey Forbes and top-ranked Fiona Crawley sealed the clean sweep for the Tar Heels. Tanguilig, Brantmeier and Scotty were each well on their way to straight sets wins when their matches were stopped.

Carolina is set to face Old Dominion in the second round of the championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. It will be a big day for UNC’s new Chewning Tennis Center, as the men’s program will be playing in the first round of its championship against Drake on that same day. Should the women’s team win, it would advance to the NCAA Super Regionals next weekend. Those are held on campus sites.
