The UNC men’s lacrosse team dropped a low-scoring contest with No. 9 Johns Hopkins on Saturday and the women’s team dominated High Point on Sunday in a pair of games at Dorrance Field.

For the men’s team, it’s the first loss of the season and drops the Tar Heels to 2-1. Carolina kept it close with the Blue Jays for most of the afternoon, tying the game at 1-1, 3-3 and 5-5 in the first half. But Johns Hopkins scored three straight goals across the late second and early third quarters, and UNC would never get closer than a two-goal deficit for the rest of the day. The Blue Jays outscored the Tar Heels 5-2 in the third after taking a 6-5 lead into the locker room.

Dominic Pietralama, whose father both played and coached at Johns Hopkins, scored two goals and gave out an assist. Ty English added two goals.

The nine goal scored is by far Carolina’s lowest-scoring output of the 2024 season. The Tar Heels will be back in action on Friday when they host No. 11 Princeton at Dorrance Field at 8 p.m.

The women’s team, fresh off an overtime win at Virginia in the ACC opener on Friday, had no such scoring issues on Sunday against High Point. The Tar Heels found the back of the net 23 times, including 15 times in the first half. Three Tar Heels – Olivia Dirks, Eva Ingrilli and Reilly Casey – each registered hat tricks, and six more players scored twice. Carolina outshot the Panthers 41-11.

UNC played a season-high 29 players, including all four goalies. Its 23 goals are its most in a single game since scoring 24 against Virginia in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

Now 4-1 overall, Carolina will be back in action on March 2 when it hosts No. 2 Notre Dame at Dorrance Field.
