The Tar Heels will kick off their highly-anticipated 2021 football season Friday night when they visit Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech. Carolina is coming off its first Orange Bowl appearance and returns several key starters for this year’s team, including junior quarterback Sam Howell.

Blacksburg has proved a difficult place to play for UNC teams of the past, as the Tar Heels have lost four of their last five contests at Lane Stadium. But Carolina will enter the game ranked No. 10 in the preseason AP Poll, their highest preseason mark since 1997. That season also happened to be head coach Mack Brown’s last season in Chapel Hill before taking the head coaching job at Texas.

Here is how to tune in to the UNC vs. Virginia Tech game as it kicks off at 6 p.m. on Friday:

Broadcast Schedule

Those hoping to listen on the radio with Jones Angell on the call can do so at 97.9 FM and 1360 AM, or by streaming the radio broadcast on Chapelboro.com.

97.9 the Hill’s radio coverage of the game will begin at 3 p.m. with Inside Carolina Live, broadcasting from Old East Tavern and hosted by Joey Powell and special guest host, Jason Staples, with regular co-host Tommy Ashley calling in to set the scene from Blacksburg.

At 5 p.m., the broadcast will shift over to Jones Angell and the Tar Heel Sports Network for their pregame coverage until kickoff. They will also carry postgame coverage for approximately an hour after the conclusion of the game. After that, the broadcast shifts back to Chapel Hill, where veteran sports radio personalities, Paul Connell and Andy Chacos, will host their hour-long analysis show “On the Heels.”

All of these broadcasts will be available live on the radio or by streaming on Chapelboro.com.

TV Schedule

Television coverage of the game begins at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN. As of today, Spectrum, AT&T U-verse, Dish and DirectTV all carry ESPN.

What if I don’t have cable?

A live stream will be available on ESPN’s digital platforms.

Additionally, several cord-cutting options carry ESPN.

YouTube TV prices at $65/month and carries all of ESPN’s channels (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, etc.).

Hulu TV also goes for $65/month and includes all ESPN channels.

Sling TV is the cheapest, with its Orange Package at $35/month, but includes the fewest channels. Make sure to avoid Sling Blue, as that package does not carry ESPN.
