It was a big 24 hours for head coach Mack Brown and the UNC football program. The Tar Heels received commitments from two in-state, four-star recruits in the class of 2024: receiver Jordan Shipp from Providence Day School in Charlotte and safety Malcolm Ziglar from nearby Fuquay-Varina High School.

Shipp announced his decision on Sunday and is now the highest-rated receiver commitment for the Tar Heels in the class. Shipp picked UNC over offers from several other schools, including Michigan and NC State. 247 Sports rates Shipp as the No. 9 overall player in the state of North Carolina. Gabe Brooks, national scouting analyst for 247 Sports, described Shipp as a “good-sized outside receiver” and a “polished technician” who “presents a dangerous back-shoulder target.”

Shipp’s commitment also brought out some good-natured rivalry trash talk. Shipp’s high school teammate and NC State commit Brody Barnhardt made sure to present Shipp with wine and cheese — which has become an unofficial insult for UNC fans — after Shipp’s announcement.

Monday afternoon brought more good news for the Tar Heels, as Ziglar announced his commitment in a ceremony at his high school. Ziglar picked Carolina over finalists South Carolina and Notre Dame. 247 Sports rates Ziglar as the No. 192 overall player in the country and the No. 5 player in North Carolina, making him the highest-ranked recruit in either metric in UNC’s 2024 recruiting class.

Brooks described the six-foot, two-inch Ziglar as a “lanky, rangy defensive back who could thrive at multiple positions.” Brooks also said Ziglar has “the on-field resume and athletic profile that suggest a long-term ceiling at the pro level.”

With the commitments of Shipp and Ziglar, UNC now has 24 pledges in the 2024 recruiting class. 247 Sports ranks Carolina’s class at No. 20 in the nation and No. 4 in the ACC, behind Florida State, Clemson and Miami.
