The UNC field hockey team revealed its 2022 regular season schedule Monday, and it’s sure to rack up frequent flyer miles for all involved.

Of the team’s 15 scheduled games, only six will come in the friendly confines of Karen Shelton Stadium. After three exhibition games in August, the team opens its season with two games in Winston-Salem against Michigan and Iowa, as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. It’s an identical to the team’s first two games of the 2021 season, though Carolina is hoping to avoid identical results: they lost to both the Wolverines and Hawkeyes last season.

UNC then returns home to host two Ivy League opponents in Princeton and Penn, before taking a rare west coast trip the next weekend. The Tar Heels will visit Cal and Stanford in September. It will be the program’s first-ever visits to both schools.

The road trips continue the next weekend as Carolina travels to Louisville. The Tar Heels will then return home to host Wake Forest, only to get back on the road for the next three games at Liberty, Boston College and UConn. That’s six of seven games played in true road environments.

Carolina will then play three consecutive home games against Syracuse, Virginia and Saint Joseph’s before visiting Duke to close out the season.

The Tar Heels are looking to rebound from an up-and-down 2021 season which saw them win their fifth consecutive ACC Tournament, but lose in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to eventual national champion Northwestern. It snapped a streak of three consecutive national championships for the Tar Heels. In addition, the team will look to send superstar Erin Matson out on a high note. 2022 will be Matson’s final season with the team.
