Carolina outscored Penn and Princeton by a combined score of 7-0 in two weekend wins to sweep the ACC-Ivy League Conference Crossover in Louisville during the weekend. Head coach Erin Matson’s Tar Heels are now 4-0, with three of those wins coming on neutral turf.
Against the Quakers on Friday, Carolina outshot Penn 25-3 and took a whopping 15 penalty corners. Ryleigh Heck and Pleun Lammers each found the back of the cage within the first 10 minutes, Sietske Brüning scored with 32 seconds left to go in the half to give UNC a commanding 3-0 lead. Charly Bruder scored less than two minutes into the second half and Heck scored again early in the fourth to complete the dominating effort.
The Tar Heels enjoyed much of the possession once again against No. 15 Princeton, but the Tigers held their nerve through a scoreless first half. Jasmina Smolenaars finally broke through just 62 seconds into the third quarter to open the scoring, and Bruder doubled the lead a few minutes later. Despite a flurry of opportunities at the end of the quarter, Princeton had no answer, and the Tar Heels earned their second straight shutout.
No. 2 Carolina will be back in action when it hosts its home opener at Karen Shelton Stadium on September 20 at 5 p.m. against No. 10 Syracuse.
