Carolina’s own Anton Down-Jenkins is making waves at the Olympic Games… literally.

The rising senior diver, competing for his home country of New Zealand, advanced to the semifinals of the Olympic 3-meter springboard competition earlier Monday morning. He finished 16th with 394.45 points.

Down-Jenkins and Aranza Vazquez of Mexico are the first Tar Heels to compete in Olympic diving, according to Carolina athletics. Vazquez, a rising sophomore from La Paz, Mexico, finished in 6th place in the women’s 3-meter springboard competition on Sunday morning.

The men’s 3-meter springboard semifinals begin Monday night at 9 p.m. Eastern time, where Down-Jenkins will attempt to qualify for the medal round. That phase of the competition is scheduled for that same night, at 2 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday morning.

Down-Jenkins is hoping to become the first Olympic diving medalist in the history of New Zealand.
