The UNC men’s basketball team dropped two spots to No. 18 in the latest AP Poll, while the women’s team rose one spot to No. 21. Both polls were released Monday.
The men’s team split its pair of games during the past week. The Tar Heels lost badly at NC State Tuesday night in Raleigh, falling 82-58 in their worst defeat at the hands of the Wolfpack since 1962. But Carolina got a boost from the return of center Henri Veesaar Saturday at Syracuse, defeating the Orange for the second time this season. Veesaar scored 19 points after missing the team’s previous two games.
Elsewhere in the poll, Duke is the new No. 1 team after defeating previous No. 1 Michigan in Washington, D.C. Saturday. Virginia checks in at No. 11 while Louisville, which visits Chapel Hill Monday night, dropped three spots to No. 24 after losing at SMU last week. For a full look at the men’s poll, click here.
The Tar Heels and Cardinals will tip off at 7 p.m. Monday night.
On the women’s side, Carolina won both of its games during the week to improve to 23-6. The Tar Heels rallied from an early deficit to defeat Virginia Tech 66-63 in overtime on the road, then returned home with a blowout win against Pitt Sunday afternoon. Louisville remains the highest-ranked ACC team at No. 10, despite losing at home to Virginia Sunday. Duke, which also lost Sunday at Clemson, is No. 12. UNC is the only other ranked ACC team. Virginia, Syracuse, Notre Dame and NC State all received votes. For a full look at the women’s poll, click here.
Carolina will visit Virginia Thursday night in its final road test of the regular season. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
