UNC Women’s Basketball Uses Big 2nd Quarter to Beat Pitt in Chapel Hill

UNC scored 30 points in the second quarter to flip Sunday’s game against Pitt in Chapel Hill, and the Tar Heels continued piling on after halftime in a 78-50 win.

UNC had trailed the entire first quarter as Pitt, which came into Sunday with just one ACC win, forced the Tar Heel offense to miss each of its first six shots and 16 of its first 20. The Panthers led by as much as 11-4 and took a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.

Carolina got a jolt after the quarter break thanks to consecutive made three-pointers from Laila Hull and Lanie Grant which gave UNC its first lead. The threes would keep flying throughout the period, with Hull making three more and Nyla Brooks, who was making her first career start, adding another. The Tar Heels shot 6-8 (75 percent) from downtown in the quarter and 11-19 (57.9 percent) overall, blowing the game open and leading 42-27 at halftime.

Hull, a redshirt sophomore, finished the game with career highs in both points (17) and made threes (five) in just 18 minutes of action. Brooks led the team with 18 points while grabbing six of Carolina’s 55 total rebounds. Elina Aarnisalo (11 points) also reached double figures. Despite UNC’s red-hot second quarter, the Tar Heels finished just 29-73 (39.7 percent) from the floor. On the other side, Pitt finished with nearly as many personal fouls (14) as made baskets (19) and made only three threes. UNC outscored the Panthers 20-9 on second-chance opportunities, 16-5 on the fastbreak and 31-5 in bench points.

With Sunday’s win, UNC is now 23-6 overall and 12-4 in ACC play. The program has now won at least 12 ACC games in consecutive seasons for the first time since doing so in 2004-05 and 2005-06. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they visit Virginia in Charlottesville Thursday night at 7 p.m.
