The UNC baseball team lost another close game at Boshamer Stadium Friday night, falling to Boston College 9-8 in extra innings. It’s another heartbreaker for the Diamond Heels, whose last three losses have come by a combined three runs.

It didn’t look like the game would be a close one early, as UNC answered a pair of BC runs in the top of the first inning with six in the bottom of the frame. Vance Honeycutt and Alberto Osuna each homered during the inning.

But the Eagles fought back into it with three runs in the third and tied the game in the fifth. After Carolina’s bats couldn’t retake the lead, the Eagles seized it in the ninth with a go-ahead home run. This time, it was UNC’s turn to answer back: Jackson Van De Brake singled home Mac Horvath in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game again.

The Diamond Heels threatened to end the game then and there by loading the bases via a hit by pitch and an intentional walk, but Colby Wilkerson grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Boston College then scored twice in the 10th inning against Kevin Eaise to take a 9-7 lead. Carolina managed one run in the bottom of the inning, but Vance Honeycutt struck out looking with two men on to end the game.

UNC is now 25-13 overall and 9-8 in ACC play. The second game of this weekend’s series is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m.
