Vance Honeycutt hit two home runs, but that was all the offense the Diamond Heels could muster Friday night at No. 15 Virginia, as the Cavaliers cruised to a 7-2 win to clinch the three-game series. Carolina will look to avoid a sweep on Saturday.

Virginia jumped in front early with a three-run blast in the bottom of the 1st inning. But UNC starter Jason DeCaro settled down after that, keeping the Cavaliers off the scoreboard for the next five innings. Honeycutt’s two solo shots cut the deficit down to 3-2 entering the seventh, but a first-pitch home run and a four-pitch walk signaled the end of DeCaro’s night in the bottom of the inning. The Cavaliers would score two more runs in the frame and another in the eighth to seal the win.

After Carolina plated 11 runs on Thursday, Honeycutt was the only Tar Heel to record an extra-base hit on Friday. Carolina hitters struck out 10 times on the evening, including a combined eight by the bottom five hitters in the lineup.

UNC is now 25-6 and will be back in action in the final game of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Diamond Heels have not been swept all season.
