The No. 1 UNC women’s lacrosse team left no doubt Thursday afternoon at Louisville, pounding the Cardinals in a 20-7 win to improve to 7-0 this season. The win was also an historic one, as it was head coach Jenny Levy’s 100th conference win in her illustrious career. She is the first coach in ACC women’s lacrosse history to accomplish this feat.

Goals from Reilly Casey, Caitlyn Wurzburger and Marissa White staked Carolina to a 3-0 lead within the first 10:14, and the Tar Heels stayed in front for good. Louisville made a game of it in the second quarter by cutting the lead to 6-5, but a run of six unanswered goals from UNC put to bed any thoughts of an upset.

Wurzburger and Casey each tied for the team lead with seven points on the afternoon — Wurzburger with five goals and two assists and Casey with four goals and three assists. White also recorded a hat trick to draw her into a tie with Casey for second on the team with 16 goals this season. Wurzburger holds the lead with 17, and no other Tar Heel has reached 10.

Carolina dominated possession against the Cardinals, outshooting them 44-19 and winning 21 of 31 draw controls.

The win is Carolina’s 20th consecutive in a true road environment, its 26th consecutive ACC regular-season win and its 29th overall win in a row. The 20 goals scored were also a season-high, though the Tar Heels have hit double digits in all seven games this season.

Up next for the Tar Heels is their stiffest test of the season: a national semifinal rematch with No. 3 Northwestern on Sunday on the Wildcats’ home turf. A miracle comeback from Carolina against Northwestern last season kept their championship season alive, and the Wildcats will no doubt be hungry for revenge. Sunday’s game is scheduled for 1:#0 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
