This Saturday marks the annual Chapel Hill/Lincoln High School Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, with five distinguished former Tigers recognized for earning their place in the Class of 2018.
The event–to be held at 6:30 p.m. in the CHHS cafeteria–will honor James Atwater Jr., Rick Bynum, Peter Blackwell Cloutier, Tiara Headen and Carly Smith.
Atwater was a standout full back on the undefeated 1957 and 1958 Lincoln High School football teams, and would later go on to play in college at Maryland State.
Bynum, too, excelled in football–as he led Chapel Hill to a combined 15-5 record over the 1973 and 1974 seasons. He became the first Tiger to pass for over 1,000 yards in a season and finished his career with over 2,700. In addition to his All-Conference football career, Bynum was also a two-time lettermen in basketball.
The swimming pool is where both Cloutier and Smith made their names.
Cloutier won state titles in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events in both 1991 and 1992 and was a member of four relay teams that won state titles before going on to compete at UNC. His 200-meter time in 1992 stood as a North Carolina record for nine years.
Smith, meanwhile, graduated in 2009 as a four-time 4A state champion in the 100-meter breaststroke and remains the state record holder in that event. While still in high school, she was an Olympic Trials qualifier in 2008.
The final inductee, Headen, starred on both the basketball and volleyball courts. In basketball, though, she was a four-time All-Conference performer and earned All-State honors as a senior in 2004. Headen would go on to play college basketball at Iona.
