Lingering impacts from Winter Strom Grayson have caused local schools and government offices to close or operate on a delay over the last two days.

Friday was also originally the deadline to pay property taxes without penalty in Orange and the surrounding counties.

The inclement weather caused Orange and Chatham county government offices to be closed on Thursday and both offices are scheduled to open on a delay on Friday. But residents of each county must still submit their payments by Friday to avoid late penalties. Residents in the two counties can submit costs online for Orange and Chatham or mail in their payments. As long as mailings are postmarked by January 5, they will not be considered late. Orange County also has a drop box outside of the doors at the office at 228 South Churton Street in Hillsborough.

Meanwhile, Durham County has extended the property tax payment deadline to Monday, January 8.

“Due to the recent winter storm’s closing of Durham County offices on Thursday and causing shortened hours on Friday, we have extended the deadline for citizens to pay their 2017 Real and Tangible Personal Property taxes – without penalty – until Monday, January 8,” said Durham County tax administrator Kim Simpson said in a release. “After that, interest will begin on unpaid taxes.”

Durham County payments can be submitted in-person, by telephone, online or by mail.
