With a night of freezing temperatures, rain and possibly snow ahead, UNC announced it is moving to Condition 2 on Thursday.
The university shared an Alert Carolina message to its community, saying it is suspending operations starting at 11 p.m. Thursday and will stay in Condition 2 until 5 p.m. on Friday.
Condition 2, one of three responses to inclement weather that changes campus operations, means classes are cancelled and all non-mandatory operations are suspended. The only employees meant to be on campus are mandatory employees, or those who perform functions absolutely essential to running the school’s core operations.
UNC said if there is a change in operational conditions after 5 p.m. on Friday, it will be shared with the campus community before 3 p.m.
Additionally, a key resource in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community also announced a shift in operations due to the inclement weather. Chapel Hill Transit announced Thursday it is delaying the start times of bus service on Friday, with many of the lines not starting until at or after 10 a.m.
A full list of start times for Chapel Hill Transit buses can be found here.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Triangle, which started Thursday at 4:00 p.m. and continues until Saturday at 4:00 a.m. Despite the weather system likely bringing more snow to the region east of the Triangle, meteorologists say this system could produce the largest snowfall the region has seen in three years. It comes just a few days after light snowfall and icy roads on Sunday, January 16.
The Orange County government and Chatham County government each announced they would be opening buildings and offices on a delay Friday morning due to the weather. Services will operate on a two-hour delay. Additionally, the Orange and Chatham County Courts system announced it will be fully closed on Friday.
Additional winter weather closures in the community include the Carolina Dialysis center in Carrboro, as well as the Carolina Dialysis – Pittsboro location in Chatham County.
