UNC announced it has selected the next permanent dean for the university’s College of Arts & Sciences.

Terry Rhodes, who has been serving in the interim role since Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz left the position, will effectively become the permanent dean on Sunday, March 1. Rhodes, who previously served as the senior associate dean for fine arts and humanities for seven years, is the first faculty member from the fine arts to be named dean of the college since 1935.

Guskiewicz and Provost Bob Blouin announced the news in a university release on Friday, saying they are confident in Rhodes’ ability to keep the high standards of the college.

Terry’s longstanding leadership has been instrumental in creating a strengthened sense of community, enhanced student experience and expanded academic offerings in the College,” the pair said in the release. “Her appointment allows us to continue our momentum, including the implementation of the new curriculum and fundraising for the campaign.”

Rhodes is a UNC alumna, earning her bachelor of music from Carolina in 1978 and her doctor of musical arts and master of music from Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York. A renowned performer, she joined the university’s faculty in 1987 and has served in a variety of roles, including as a member of the voice faculty, UNC Opera Director, chair of the music department and faculty marshal.

“I’m deeply honored to be following in Kevin’s footsteps as dean,” Rhodes said in a statement on Friday. “The College is where students come to get an arts and sciences education that is both broad and deep. They inspire us with their dreams and their determination. Our faculty are world-class, our staff unrivaled in their dedication to this place. The College may be Carolina’s oldest school, but we are firmly focused on the future and all that we can accomplish by working together.”
