The Town of Chapel Hill announced detours to buses that normally run on West Franklin Street for Friday, as a ceremony celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Chapel Hill Nine closes the street.

Chapel Hill Transit shared detoured routes for the CW, F and J lines, which will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and end at 5 p.m. The department will detour the bus routes beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, February 28, and ending at 5 p.m.

Here are the detours for the various bus lines, according to Chapel Hill Transit:

  • Route F heading toward Colony Lake will continue straight onto Rosemary Street from Main Street, instead of turning right onto west Franklin Street. It will turn right onto Columbia Street and left onto Franklin Street to continue on the regular route.
  • Route F heading toward Old Fayetteville Road will turn right onto Columbia Street from Franklin Street. The route will turn left onto Rosemary Street and continue onto Main Street to continue its regular route.
  • Route J heading towards Collins Crossing and Route CW towards UNC-Chapel Hill will continue past Franklin Street on Columbia Street and turn left onto Rosemary Street. The route will continue onto Main Street in Carrboro to follow the normal routing.
  • Route J heading towards Rock Creek and Route CW towards Carrboro will continue onto Rosemary Street from Main Street in Carrboro. The route will turn right onto Columbia Street to continue the normal route.

The public ceremony for the Chapel Hill Nine, which includes the dedication a new commemorative marker, is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. In addition to the transit detour, the town said on-street parking will not be allowed in the area of Franklin Street near the West End Wine Bar, which is the site of the group’s sit-in protest in 1960.
