A worldwide ranking recently listed UNC as one of the top universities in the world.
According to the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities completed by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked 30th out of the top 1,000 universities. UNC also tied for 20th within the United States among global universities and ranked seventh among public universities in the United States.
ShanghaiRanking, which released its annual report in August, also had UNC ranked in the top 20 universities for 11 different academic subjects. Carolina came in second for dentistry and oral sciences, fourth in pharmaceutical sciences, fifth in public health and ninth in statistics. Other academic fields honored were education, nursing, biological sciences, biomedical engineering, sociology, computer sciences and business administration.
The ranking represents an improvement for UNC, as it placed 33rd in the 2019 rankings released by the consultancy group.
A release from the university with the news said the Academic Ranking of World Universities evaluates universities based on objective indicators. The number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers and the per capita academic performance of an institution are just a few of the ways universities are ranked. The organization first published university rankings in 2003.
Earlier in 2020, Microsoft Academic ranked UNC as the highest-rated university in the U.S. for coronavirus research.
