UNC Police confirmed on Tuesday that the suspect in the Campus Y vandalism incident has been arrested.

On January 24, the suspect unlawfully entered the Campus Y building on campus and left anti-Semitic vandalism. The break-in and vandalism was reported to UNC Police, who issued two warrants for the person’s arrest.

Authorities issued an update on February 1, saying the suspect had been apprehended and was undergoing medical evaluation. With the suspect officially released from medical care, the person has since been arrested and charged with misdemeanor vandalism and felony breaking and entering.

On the Campus Y’s Facebook page, the co-presidents described the scene they found once the vandalism was discovered, stating that the office was left “in shambles,” with Confederate flag imagery scattered along tables and sofas and racial slurs left on the whiteboard.

The Facebook message said the co-presidents assume the attack was targeted. Drawers and cabinets within the offices were found empty and the message speculated what sensitive and personal information the suspect attained.

“The presence of swastikas and racial slurs on separate floors of the Y suggest that this was an attack motivated by white supremacy, anti-Semitism, racial hatred, and misogyny; however, we want to highlight that we do not know the individual’s affiliations or intentions,” reads the message.

Following the incident, UNC condemned the actions of the suspect in a message co-signed by by UNC Provost Bob Blouin and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Amy Johnson.

“Hateful vandalism is not acceptable anywhere on our campus, but this breach of an established organization that promotes equality and justice is particularly egregious.”
