The iconic landmark of the UNC campus in Chapel Hill has been vandalized, according to university police.

The UNC Police Department shared an alert on Monday, saying the Old Well on East Cameron Avenue suffered damage after part of the historic structure was pushed over. Police said the vandalism occurred between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

A police report shared with Chapelboro described the damage as an estimated $3,000, stemming largely from the fountain base, water and PVC line, and the wooden diorama.

UNC Police also shared Monday photos of two people believed to be suspects in the case. University investigators are asking anyone who may recognize these people or have information about the vandalism to the Old Well to get in touch with Investigator Humphrey by calling 919-962-3534.

Chapelboro visited the Old Well site on Monday after the news was shared, and the well was not closed off to the public following the vandalism. UNC Police confirmed the fountain was returned to its original position and the water has been turned off until repairs can be completed.

Some of the damage to the Old Well’s fountain following an act of vandalism. UNC Police said the fountain was returned to its original position after being pushed over, and the water would be shut off until further notice.

The Old Well dates back to the founding of UNC-Chapel Hill in 1795. The iconic structure added a rotunda in 1897, and then received upgrades of granite and copper dome in 1954 to make the landmark even more permanent. It had undergone closure and renovations as recently as last summer, as UNC added a permanent accessibility ramp to reach the fountain.

Because of its history and tradition, vandalism to the Old Well is not new. UNC has responded to paint, poop, and other things that have covered or affected the Old Well at different times.
