UNC Campus Health is treating “a few dozen students” for a possible virus outbreak.
Officials said in an Alert Carolina message that “based on one confirmed case, it is most likely Norovirus.”
An earlier e-mail sent to students Thursday said that “Campus Health has treated a number of students today with gastro-related symptoms that resemble Norovirus.”
WRAL is reporting the symptoms are affecting “a significant section of the Greek community,” which is causing the UNC Panhellenic Council to postpone sorority recruitment. WRAL is quoting an e-mail the television station reports was sent to students.
Norovirus symptoms include nausea, fever, vomiting and abdominal pain and officials are reportedly asking students to wash their hands frequently with soap and warm water and to stay home if they feel as though they have symptoms.
The Orange County Health Department released the following statement on Friday:
“The Orange County Health Department is working closely with UNC Campus Health to investigate the outbreak of gastrointestinal illness affecting the student population. Communicable disease staff are interviewing affected students and counseling them on self-care and control measures including hygiene and environmental cleaning. The health department staff appreciate the collaborative relationship with UNC Campus Health as they work together to assure the health of the campus and community.”
